He knows I need him

He knows I want him to love me

And his dad likes it that way

So his dad pretends to love him

Sometimes when he’s looking

And hurts him when he’s not

But the best part for dad

Is how funny is this kid

That needs him so badly

A child is a soft thing with a soft mind and a heart like a piece of velvet

A child in a hard place will make a soft thing out of the hard place

With dreams and imaginary thoughts

Like drawings on prison walls

But your father loved you sometimes

Yet he never looks at you

Like you’re his

There is a children’s myth

That at the end of cruelty

There is a limit,

And if you endure it long enough

At the limit of cruelty you will find love

Like the treasure at the end of the rainbow

And the worst cruelty

Is who you have become in search of that love

Someone who can never be held without harming others

Touched without making fingers bleed

So much poison

So much cruelty

All for the sake of love

You reach for me

Like I’m your father too

Turn around and look at me you scream

When you reach for me

When you bend and break me

I hear all the secrets

Of your father

Of a soft child in a hard place

The life of a child

Become dreams we live in

The nightmare that you never wake up from
