Now that I feel the full weight of the world

I know what it is worth

Everything has a price

Every quick thought

Bright mercurial light

Even my pride

All I’ve ever wanted

Was impossible to gain

And now I see why

I could never command the world

At the snap of a finger

Like a genie king

And they chased me like I was a trickster

Out of the house

Out of the city

So I wandered the streets

And begged for pieces

Of everlasting sanity

I was aching

I have never been granted permission to ask

Even to beg

Starving,

Greedily,

I fought against my chains

Of human bondage

Of fairness

Because to try to control

And at the same time get what I wanted

Was too much

The earth was too heavy

Too important

I must choose one or the other

I must sacrifice always

That cheering and booing gladiator stadium

The unwelcomed kingdom

But giving up my immortal life

My godly imagination

My crown of air and gold

It was enough

Finding that

what I wanted

was something else entirely
